Blindfolded Tortellini Taste Test | Can I Spot the Best Tortellini Brand?

Tortellini: a tiny parcel of comfort that lives up to its name. In Italian, tortellini translate to “little cakes” or “little twists,” and that’s exactly what they are—delicate bundles of joy. This Italian classic hails from Emilia-Romagna, traditionally filled with rich, decadent ingredients like veal or spinach.

Even though you might love eating tortellini, they are not the easiest pasta shape to make! So, if you don’t have the time to make tortellini from scratch, I wanted to see how the store-bought varieties compare to home made. In this challenge, I tested a variety of supermarket options to see which ones truly deliver on flavor, texture, and overall satisfaction. In this taste test, I tried both spinach and veal-filled tortellini all without any butter, cheese, or sauce to interfere with the flavors.

Let’s find out which of these store-bought tortellini is worth adding to your weekly grocery trip!

Meet the contenders for today’s Blindfolded Tortellini Taste Test

  • Grand Italian Tuscan Finest
  • Latina Fresh
  • Rana
  • Leggo’s
  • La Tosca

Tortellini brands competing in the Blindfolded Tortellini Taste Test

Grand Italian Tuscan Finest

Made in Australia, this tortellini cooks in just 4 minutes. At first glance, the appearance is promising—the color looks great, and it doesn’t have that machine-made feel. The pasta itself is really nice but the veal filling is not so great.

Score: 5/10

Latina Fresh

Known for their wide range of pasta, this one cooked in 5 minutes, though it didn’t look as appealing as some of the others. The filling is delicate and overall, these are a solid option for a quick meal. Definitely better with a sauce or some butter.

Score: 6/10

Rana

An Italian brand from Emilia-Romagna that I’ve enjoyed many times before. The presentation is beautiful—you can clearly see the golden egg pasta (once you’re not blindfolded) The texture is lovely, and filling is spot-on. Paired with a good sauce, these Tortellini would be hard to fault.

Score: 7/10

Leggo’s

A big name in pasta and sauces, but not for me. The filling had a bit of a weird pink colour , and while it looked OK it wasn’t anything like Rana. The pasta texture was off, and the filling was confusing—I couldn’t tell if it was veal or vegetarian. Overall, not great…

Score: 4/10

La Tosca

Despite the Italian-sounding name, this one left me disappointed. The tortellini were too small, and the pasta lacked refinement. It needed a couple more minutes of cooking, but that didn’t seem to help with the flavor that was simply bland.

Score: 4/10

Are you ready for the tortellini re-veal?

I’m not surprised that Rana came out on top in this Blindfolded Tortellini Taste Test—it’s my go-to, and it didn’t disappoint. The spinach filling is fresh and flavorful, and it’s clear that their special packaging helps keep the tortellini fresher for longer, even when shipped globally. It’s definitely worth spending on, especially if you catch it on sale.

Latina Fresh was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect much, but it delivered, especially when paired with a good sauce. While I wouldn’t normally reach for it, it’s a solid option, particularly if you’re looking for something more affordable.

As for Leggo’s and La Tosca, both scored a disappointing 4. I wasn’t shocked by this, as the filling in Leggo’s was just not-right, and La Tosca was simply bland. Neither is worth the price, and there are much better options available for the same cost.

Grand Italian was decent, but the filling could definitely use improvement.

So, what tortellini do you usually grab from the supermarket? Or do you prefer making them from scratch at home? And if you have any suggestions on what I should try next, let me know in the comments—I’m always up for a new taste test challenge!
