When most people picture the best islands to visit in Italy, they think of Capri or Sicily. But tucked away in the Adriatic, there’s a secret escape few Italians even talk about the Isole Tremiti. Imagine turquoise waters, boats that double as family kitchens, and seafood so fresh it almost leaps onto your plate. This isn’t just a trip; it’s an adventure into one of Italy’s last untouched paradises.

Sailing Into a Hidden Paradise: Welcome to Isole Tremiti
We boarded a ferry from Termoli and, after just 45 minutes, arrived at the Tremiti Islands. This tiny archipelago in the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Puglia, remains one of the best islands to visit in southern Italy. Few travelers know about it, and that is exactly what makes it so special. Known as the pearls of the Adriatic, the islands shimmer with beauty, where crystal waters, hidden coves, and timeless charm create a rare kind of magic. It is the kind of place that speaks not just to the eyes but to the soul, a hidden paradise that leaves every visitor captivated, refreshed, and forever enchanted.
Our host Roberto welcomed us aboard his old fisherman’s boat, the Motonave Victor, now transformed into a floating restaurant. With his crew beside him, he showed us the islands the way locals know them — slowly, with good food, laughter, and family at the heart of it all.

A Sea Full of Surprises
During the tour, we got a glimpse of all three main islands that make up this archipelago, often called the pearls of the Puglian Adriatic Sea. You’ll sail past rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and sunlit shores, each island offering its own charm and beauty.
The boat ride itself lasts around seven hours of pure adventure, the perfect way to discover some of the best islands to visit in Italy while experiencing the authentic seafood lifestyle. You’ll have plenty of time to relax on the sundeck, swim in pristine waters, and soak in the views. Most boats take you on a round trip of the islands so you can truly appreciate the surroundings. What’s remarkable is that many captains choose slightly different routes, and at times you feel as though yours is the only vessel drifting across an infinite expanse of sparkling blue sea.
The water is so clear it looks like glass, revealing starfish, sea urchins, and a hidden universe of marine life. The feeling of diving into these depths is indescribable — and even more magical when shared with loved ones.

Seafood as It Was Meant to Be
And of course, food is part of the Tremiti Island adventure. It begins with a simple aperitivo: fresh bread topped with tomato, basil, and a drizzle of golden extra virgin olive oil, enjoyed between swims. Then come the treasures of the sea. We cracked open ricci di mare (sea urchins) to enjoy its buttery, salty richness paired with bread and wine for the perfect bite of the ocean.
Lunch was a celebration of seafood freshness. Roberto served thin slices of tuna carpaccio, dressed with olive oil, lemon, and capers grown on the island. Forget canned tuna. Once you have tasted tuna this fresh, you will never look at a supermarket tin the same way again.
Next came steaming paccheri pasta with a sauce made from tuna, tomatoes, peppers, onion, and herbs, slowly simmered in olive oil. Every bite carried the briny taste of the sea, a reminder that tuna is best enjoyed in its purest form. Then came platters of mussels, cooked simply with garlic and lemon. This just proves that the finest seafood never needs fancy tricks, only respect for the ingredient and the tradition behind it. This is where you taste seafood the way it was meant to be eaten, just seafood, pasta, in the hands of someone who has cooked it for generations.

Why the Tremiti Islands Belong on Your Bucket List
The Tremiti archipelago is not glamorous in the way Capri is. You will not find designer shops or buzzing piazzas. Instead, the sea sets the rhythm, fishermen trace every curve of the coast, and their meals celebrate simplicity.
Among the best islands to visit in Italy, the Tremiti Islands stand out for their authenticity. Here, joy comes from tasting seafood pulled fresh from the water that very morning, from swimming until your skin tingles. And most importantly from laughing with loved ones over bread and wine.
If you want to experience Italy differently, skip the crowded tourist spots. Go where even Italians rarely venture. Let the Tremiti Islands show you what it means to taste the sea and live in the moment.
