How to Make Olive Bread

Introducing a delectable addition to Vincenzo’s Plate homemade bread dough recipe: olives! By incorporating these savory ingredients, you can elevate a basic loaf of bread into an antipasto dish that pairs perfectly with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. To begin, simply mix in the olives with the bread dough and bake as usual.

Once the bread is ready, slice it into pieces and serve alongside your favorite Italian dishes. The combination of the salty olives and rich olive oil will take your taste buds on a journey to the Mediterranean.

Vincenzo’s Top Tips To Make Olive Bread

Add the olives towards the end of kneading

Incorporate the olives into the dough in the last few minutes of kneading to avoid overworking the dough and ensure the olives are evenly distributed.

Let the dough rise in a warm place

Give your dough enough time to rise and develop flavor.

Bake until golden brown

Bake it until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cook Time: 1 hour hr
Total Time: 1 hour hr 20 minutes mins
Servings: 6

Equipment

  • Rolling pin
  • knife with a point
  • Wooden board or Kitchen Bench
  • Pizza tray better if it has holes at the bottom so it cooks through
  • Baking Paper

Ingredients

  • 450 grams Vincenzo’s Plate Bread Dough
  • 8 Large black olives, pitted and cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 small cup Plain flour
  • Extra virgin olive oil, EVOO
  • Balsamic Vinegar

Instructions

  • Make sure the dough has been out of the fridge for 15 minutes.
  • Throw some flour on the wooden board/bench and spread it using the palm of your hand and place the dough on top.
  • Spread the dough with the rolling pin making sure it is not too flat or too thin.
  • Place half of the olives on top, pressing them into the dough at least 4cm apart from one another.
  • Now, roll the dough with your hands and try to cover all of the olives with the dough.
  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
  • Add the rest of the olives by pressing them into the dough and covering them once again.
  • Use the rolling pin to gently press the olives further into the dough. It’s OK if you can still see a couple of the olives at the top.
  • Line the pizza tray with baking paper and place the ball of dough on top.
  • Now, with a sharp knife, make a slit on the right hand side of the ball of dough. It should open slightly but make sure you don’t cut all the way down!
  • Place the tray in the oven for at least one hour.
  • Once it has browned on top and cooked through, leave the bread to rest for between 15-20 minutes.
  • E ora si mangia, Vincenzo’s Plate….Enjoy!

How to serve Olive Bread

Once your olive bread has finished baking and has rested, it’s time to add some extra flavor. Pour a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil and at least two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar into a small bowl or glass. This combination of oil and vinegar provides a delicious and tangy dipping sauce for the bread.

You can either dip pieces of bread directly into the mix or serve the bread with the oil and vinegar drizzled over the top. The bread will soak up the flavors and become even more delicious. This simple addition can take your pastry to the next level and impress your guests with its delicious taste.
