Blindfolded Frozen Pizza Taste Test | Is it still the best tasting when I’m blindfolded?

You all know my love for fresh, homemade pizza—that’s why I can’t believe I’m doing this. I recently took on a Blindfolded Frozen Pizza Test! Even though I don’t usually have frozen pizza in my kitchen, I couldn’t ignore the fact that it’s a go-to meal for many. I actually found some interesting statistics online. Check these out:

According to a recent survey by Circana Market Advantage, a HUGE 70% of U.S. households regularly purchase frozen pizza. And if that wasn’t surprising enough, data from Statista reveals that over 203 million Americans ate frozen pizza in 2020, with around the same numbers expected by the end of this year.

It’s the perfect solution for a quick and easy meal at home, but with so many options in the frozen aisle, how do you know which box is worth grabbing? Well, that’s where I come in.

Join me on this Blindfolded Frozen Pizza Taste Test, where I sample a variety of frozen pizzas straight from the supermarket shelves. I judged them based on appearance, quality of ingredients, and, of course, the dough. The twist is that I didn’t know which brand I was tasting until the end.

Find out which one I believe deserves a spot in your freezer!

Buonissimo Pizza Pepperoni

This pizza features a pepperoni topping that resembles processed salami, with a decent spread of tomatoes and mozzarella that look passable. However, the crust has a noticeable line, and while it may look like focaccia when baked, it was actually quite doughy and dense. If you’re absolutely starving, this will fill you up, but for those who prefer a lighter, thinner crust, this one is a bit heavy.

Satisfyingly filling, but not standout when it comes to flavor. 4.5/10.

McCain thin & crispy Pizza

McCain is a household name in the frozen food world, known for their chips and pies. Their thin & crispy pizza, however, I’m not so sure about. It has a flat appearance, but the salami impressively avoids burning even after a long bake. The cheese cooks fine but isn’t a big stand out. On the plus side, the salami is actually nice, —better than expected for a frozen pizza—and the crust is pretty crispy.

Better than expected 6.5/10.

Fropro Protein Pizza

This pizza aims to be a healthier option with fewer carbs, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark visually. The cheese is an unappealing yellow, and the salami looks processed. Although once baked, the dough turns out better than expected, with a nice thin crust that’s easy to digest. However, the toppings, while acceptable, could definitely be improved.

The crust is thin and digestible, but overall lacking 6/10.

McCain Sourdough Pizza

As a fan of sourdough, I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, the appearance was disappointing—the crust has an odd line that makes it look like two doughs were fused together. After the lengthy cook time, the salami ended up slightly burnt. Despite this, the dough and crust are quite good, and ingredients pretty solid.

6.5/10.

Ristorante Pizza Pepperoni

Unlike most pizzas on this list, this one is manufactured from Canada. It’s also the smallest, and I must confess—this was my frozen pizza of choice in my early twenties. After baking, the salami turned out too dark, and the taste is pretty bland. It’s edible, but there are far better options out there.

A trip down memory lane, but these days, my taste buds crave more 3/10

Aldi Best Margherita

Made in Italy, this pizza offers a classic Margherita experience. Once baked, the crust is crunchy yet soft—always a good sign. The dough has impressive quality, making it a strong contender, especially considering its budget-friendly price.

Not the best in the world, but a solid option in the frozen aisle 6.5/10.

Aldi Woodfrired Formaggi Pizza

Also made fromin Italy, this four-cheese pizza features hand-topped ingredients on a thin crust. Once cooked, it looks like a typical pizza, with the cheese melting nicely except for some feta that holds its shape. The dough has a delicate texture, and the pizza overall is hearty without being too heavy.

Delicate and satisfying with a thin crust, this four-cheese pizza is rich but not 6/10.

The winner of the Blindfolded Frozen Pizza Test?

For me, the clear winner here is Aldi, not just because of the quality but also the unbeatable price. You can actually get two Aldi pizzas for the price of one McCain Thin & Crispy, which makes it incredible value. While McCain took the crown for the best toppings—loaded with ingredients that work well together—the sourdough pizza ended up being a bit too crunchy for my taste.

The low-carb option was surprisingly impressive, especially for those watching their calorie count. However, the Formaggi, which I had high hopes for, turned out to be pretty underwhelming—there was just something missing. As for Ristorante, I’m sorry to say it didn’t live up to my memories.

Aldi takes the top spot, and I’d definitely consider keeping a few of these in the freezer for those busy days when I don’t have time to cook from scratch.

I’ve learned that while these pizzas are convenient, they all have room for improvement. Who knows, maybe I’ll come up with my own frozen pizza recipe someday! What should I try next? Let me know in the comments.

In the meantime, if this frozen pizza test has left you craving the real thing, check out my recipe for Sourdough Pizza Dough.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try Nonna’s Pizza Fritta? It’s not quite a pizza, but definitely a delicious dough.

    Hello Vincenzo!

I dont know if they’re available in Australia, but here in Germany Dr. Oetker offers a raw dough pizza called “Die Ofenfrische”, which translates to “fresh from the oven”. Imho a way better taste, since the dough bakes up fresh at home. But more interesting to you might be the “La Mia Grande”, which leaps above 30cm plates. Ads speak of Salami calabrese and good Mozzarella. So if they’re available, I’d like to hear your opinion about them.

Until then, you have my respect for bringing classic italian food to attention. Thank you and grazie.

I follow a lot of your videos, recipes, and reviews. I must admit, I have an occasional guilty pleasure of a Friday night frozen pizza when I’m too lazy to cook or go out. That’s somewhat embarrassing for me as I consider myself a foodie.

I am in the U.S. and was a little disappointed with this review though. Not sure of the selections in Sydney, but I’m not familiar with most of the brands you chose. I would be curious to see reviews of popular selections In the U.S. For us that would be DiGiorno, Screamin’ Sicilian, Motor City, Red Baron, California Pizza Kitchen, Amy’s, Freschetta, Newman’s Own, Motor City Pizza Company. Those are just a few. Obviously, I have my favorites of those, but none the less, I am now curious what others think.

Thanks again for the content you provide. Long-time follower.

I’m really grateful for your suggestion about U.S. brands like DiGiorno, Screamin’ Sicilian, and Motor City – if I come across these, I’ll definitely add them to my next frozen pizza taste test. It would be great to explore the popular options in the U.S. market!

Thanks again for your support, and keep an eye out for future reviews – who knows, your favorite pizza might make the list! 🍕✨
