How to Make Passata

Italian tomato day embodies every, single thing our beautiful culture is about, family, food, passion and tradition. It is the official day, when the family comes together to make tomato passata bottles to stock up their cupboards with, for the year.

Recently, I was very lucky enough to be invited into the home of my 80 year old neighbour who makes hundreds upon hundreds of bottles of tomato passata every year with his family – and I’m talking, hundreds.

The day is not like any other. It represents so much, and in the centre of it all, is a symbol of the family. In Australia, Italian immigrants make up the ageing population, and passing the tradition on has never been more important. Take a look inside our day, when children, grandchildren and close “commare” and “cugini” all love to get involved, but at the end of the day, Nonna and Nonno rule!
